" Seeing things" an explanation

The image of a bird ( as was intended by the artist)

When I first saw Bryony's artwork I viewed it in completely the " wrong" way,  I first saw this image  casually scattered across the dining room table with a pile of others. I stood their recovering from "work" glancing at the image. I liked the swirls I liked how refreshing and modern it made the work look, like some kind of logo for a company that had  something to do with rabbits.  I looked down at our French lop Rabbit who had just finished scratching her ear and looked up at me in a way that clearly said she wound soon be begging for her favourite treat of dried mango followed by a belly rub. And then realised the ears were all wrong too long too pointy. Bryony soon walked in
" I like your Rabbit" I said stroking Rabbit's head as she chewed a small piece of mango.
" Its not a Rabbit" She protested
" Oh what is it? it looks like one?"
" Its a bird".
I stared hard at the image as my sister watched me
" Its a Rabbit" I said with certainty
" Its a bird" She said
I tilted my head looking again, thinking she was winding me up or she and I had very different ideas of what a Rabbit and a bird looked like. Finally I picked the image up and turned it so the paper was landscape. And then the little tweeter jumped out at me. I could see its beak,  its beady eye and the shape of its head that clearly made it into a bird. I tilted the paper back around and looked at it portrait.
" Oh, now I can see its its a bird, it looks like a rabbit this way round"
she looked at it, eyes squinting  " oh it does".
Mum walked in then we asked her what she thought it was her reply was "A bird" but she too tilted her head and squinted as she tried to see the Rabbit.
" Oh I can see it now" she said when the image had jumped out at her " That's good isn't it"
Dad was next in, he studied the paper a while, doing the all to obvious head tilt and squint as he looked at the image.
" Its a bird" he said " but if its portrait its a  rabbit..." he tilted the paper " and this way it looks like a gremlin"
" A gremlin?' I asked
We all moved our heads in closer to the paper and tilted...
" - or Yoda" Bryony said smiling
" Oh yeah" mum said.
It took me a while to see the Yoda/ Gremlin but I saw it more as a very strange evil looking guinea pig creature.
The portrait way up of the image which I saw as a Rabbit

The upside down landscape version of the image or the gremlin.

It may have been a quickly drawn biro on paper image but, its simplicity made it complicated . It could be tilted and viewed in a way that people saw 3 different images in one. It made us question the other persons " Version", as we tilted our heads and  listened whilst squinting our eyes to the cry of " Rabbit, bird, or gremlin" as we tried to decipher to ourselves what the image actually was, regardless of the intentions of the artist.

Golden thorns

Secret stitches
Golden thorns.

Creative fingers
 Twitching itching.

Final form

is getting close.

2 smudged fingers

Desert place crossing
In sea of denial.

Two smudged fingers
record your style.

The wind is fierce
My hair is wild.

Just like it was
When I was child.

Two smudged fingers
 Flatten and smooth.
Highlighting the way my figure moves.

The white of light
 and blue waves of fright.

Show exactly how I sat in sight.

Brown hair down and looped around.

My graffiti going underground.

The finger smudges
And before the judges.

I stand and look
A
Sinister smile.

Because this my friend
is sometimes my style.

And that is why I cannot smile.

Wrinkled cloth
 of brown and block.

Every time I beat the clock.

Clean Machine

I am not machine
Like you speak at me.

 I work dam hard
But you attack me.

What got up your flame filled nose?
Be careful not to singe your toes.

I don’t take orders.
But.
 If you ask politely.

I may respond in kindly.

Can’t do right, for doing wrong.

Everything here’s in your eyesight.

I hope that you can’t sleep tonight.

You’re not doing right.
You’re just looking for a fight.

Lucky Rabbit's foot

Little Rabs, little Rabs
you ventured out today.

Little Rabs, little Rabs
you were brave today.

Little Rabs, little Rabs
you played outside today.

You ran, you dug
you chewed that fear away.

For winter ran away today
and you snuck out to play.

If I got scared and couldn't play
could I take your foot today ?

If I held it close would it make me brave?
or give me luck today?

Black around my eyes

Curl my hair,
paint black around my eyes.

Call me square-
I like freedom in my toes.

Swirlman

Swirly, swirly, swirl man
Comes and goes.

But what he does not many know.

A splash of colour, in pitch -black dark.
His little toes will light the spark.
Of dangerous colours, in the world of art .

So go and smile
He’s made his mark.
